Literacy

One of the main goals for Mother Nature’s Heroes is literacy. Storytelling, reading and writing is threaded through every aspect of what we teach. This seemingly simple act of picking up a book opens doors to an endless adventure!

The importance of literacy

Do you remember the first time someone read you a story? The first time you read a book? What was your favourite story as a child? Did you like adventures? Travelling to other worlds?

While this memory may have been several years, or even decades ago, travelling to other worlds and having remarkable adventures could only be achieved through the pages of a book. Little did you know then, that simply picking up a book and reading page after page, helped you to develop the necessary skills for a successful future!

There are 5 top skills needed for childhood literacy. These skills will help lay the groundwork for increased self-esteem, confidence and empowerment.

The 5 literacy skills:

  • Phonemic awareness (awareness of sounds),
  • Awareness of print,
  • Vocabulary,
  • Spelling,
  • Reading comprehension

Each of these skills are essential for your child’s development. Studies have shown literacy can reduce poverty, improve health and promote social development. Reading improves more than vocabulary, spelling and education success, it also helps your child to focus and concentrate. Reading helps to keep their young brains active and engaged, giving them knowledge and improving their memory. All this from reading a book!

A person’s a person, no matter how small
